Since 2001, the German Archeological Institute in Berlin, represented through its director, Dr. Ute Franke, has been working on excavations in Sohr Damb, Balochistan.
Here lies the key for understanding regional Indo-Iranian cultures and the development of the Indus Civilisation of 2600 to 1900 BC.
The objective of the excavations is to reconstruct and explore aspects of daily life during this prehistoric period such as architecture, forms of living, funeral rituals, technology and art as well as the environmental circumstances, regional patterns of living and relations to cultures beyond this region.

The excavations of graves and household articles including ceramic pots, seals an jewelry give evidence of different periods leading eventually to the advanced Indus Civilisation which diminished around 2000 BC for reasons yet to explore.
Dr. Ute Franke and her team intended to continue their work in Sohr Damb, Balochistan from February to June 2010 but the work has been halted for security reasons due to which she has been in Karachi along with her team and working on a restoration project at the National Museum of Pakistan.
