A two week workshop designed to build the capacity of professionals involved in the conservation, restoration and protection of cultural heritage and cultural resource management was organized at the National Art Gallery. Arranged with funding from the Germany Embassy, this workshop was conducted by Friedrich Zink, an Islamabad-based German expert.
Over 50 participants attended this workshop including staff members from cultural institutions such as DoAM, the Lahore Museum, NAG and PNCA as well as teachers, students and professionals from private institutes such as the tourism industry and NGOs.
Through theoretical lectures and practical exercises, the work shop enhanced participants' knowledge and skills in terms of storage, display of objects as well as exhibition improvements. The workshop also focused on the restoration of objects of art at all participating museums and concerned institutions in Pakistan.
Participants were provided with specialized information on how to treat certain categories of objects such as sculpture, textiles, fiber & canvas, ceramics, glass, metals, furniture and woodwork, leather, skin, parchment, books and art on paper (and other carrier materials).
What makes the workshop also special is the fact that it is the first step towards the establishment of a laboratory for restoration of artworks in Islamabad, at the National Art Gallery.
