Germany most recently reaffirmed its interest in democratic and stable development in Pakistan and in Pakistan’s playing a constructive role in the region with the visit to Islamabad by Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle from 17 to 19 November 2011. On 24 March 2010, the Federal Cabinett appointed Ambassador Steiner as the Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan. The two countries’ foreign ministries hold regular bilateral policy consultations. Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Dirk Niebel visited Pakistan from 16 to 19 June 2011.

Along with India, Pakistan is one of Germany’s most important partners in South Asia. The German government is encouraging Pakistan and India to press on with the rapprochement between their two countries that began in October 2003.

Visit of Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle to Pakistan

Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Guido Westerwelle visited Pakistan from 17 to 19 November 2011. Accompanied by Ambassador Michael Steiner, Special Envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan, he met President Asif Ali Zardari, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Kayani and opposition leader Nisar Ali Khan.

Germany funds the training of media personnel with 3.7 million ruppes. The objective of the project is to develop the capacity of media personnel and institutions through offerring tailor-made training programmes for journalists working in war-zones and conflict areas.

Civil-Military Seminar in Berlin

From 24 to 30 October 2011, the second Pak-German Civil-Military Seminar will be conducted in Berlin, not only pursuing the similar seminar of 2010, but also adding to the overarching context of the International Conferences for Afghanistan in Istanbul, November 2, and Bonn, December 5, this year.
The interaction of parliamentarians and senior members of the military of both countries will help to promote and develop a common understanding on the importance and possibilities of a regional approach towards stabilization.

In the presence of over 100 selected guests, the "Cross of the Order of Merit" was bestowed to Brig. (R) Abdul Razaq Baloch for serving the bilateral German-Pakistani relations. The prestigious ceremony took place at the Serena Hotel in Quetta on 31 May 2011, where German Ambassador Dr. Michael Koch and Consul General Dr. Christian Brecht from Karachi handed over the award.

The Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary wing of the main conservative party (CDU/CSU) in the German Parliament, Dr. Schockenhoff, as well as the members of parliament Dr. Ruck and Kiesewetter paid a visit to Pakistan from 12 to 14 January 2011 meeting the Deputy Chairman of the Pakistani Parliament, Faisal Kundi, the Chairman of the Senat, Farooq Naek, the Minister of State at the Foreign Office, Nawabzada Khan, and the Deputy Chief of Army, Lt. General Waheed Arshad.

The guests also met with members of the German parliamentary friendship group and attended a symposium organised by the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation Islamabad.

Stabilizing Pakistan - Friends of Democratic Pakistan Group

“Pakistan is a very significant country that definitely must be stabilized. This also concerns our own security in Europe,” Federal Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle stressed before the beginning of the meeting on October 15 of the Friends of Democratic Pakistan in Brussels at the invitation of the European Union. The need for action is especially urgent in the wake of devastating floods.

German Development Secretary announces emergency aid for flood victims

Parliamentary State Secretary in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Ms. Gudrun Kopp, announced at the National Day reception in Islamabad on 04 October 2011 that Germany will support emergency aid measures for the victims of the current floods in the Sindh and Balochistan provinces with 5.6 million euros (approx. 650 million ruppees). Gudrun Kopp visited Pakistan from 04 to 07 October 2011 to mark 50 years of Pakistan-German development cooperation.
