Whereas most of the cooperation programmes are funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by German organistations such as GIZ or KfW, there are various individual projects implemented by Pakistani organisations which are funded directly by the Federal Foreign Office.

Germany provided motorcycles and vehicles to rebuild police capacity after flood damage

The United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) handed over 100 motorcycles and 22 vehicles to law enforcement agencies of Pakistan. These vehicles serve to build up the police capacity after the damage caused by the devastating floods in 2010. The ceremony was held on 16 March 2011 at the Police Lines Parade Grounds in Islamabad. The equipment was mainly purchased with the financial support of the Government of Germany amounting to EUR 330,000 (about 39 million PKR).

Germany supports internally displaced persons in the Mohmand Agency

Germany supports the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with EUR 1,500,000 (PKR 177,000,000) in providing humanitarian assistance to the internally displaced population in the Mohmand Agency. The project is a response to the basic needs of more than 5,000 internally displaced families living in the Nahqi Camp and the Danish Kol Camp. It is aiming to ensure adequate shelter and maintenance of the camps’ infrastructure and registration of the displaced population.

Pakistan: Strengthening federal governance through informed dialogue

The Federal government of Germany supports - in cooperation with the Canada-based NGO, Forum of Federations, and its local Pakistani partner, the Center for Civic Education Pakistan (CCEP) - a dialogue programme on federalism (August 2009 to December 2011) in Pakistan. The aim of this cooperation project is to facilitate and enhance dialogue between the central and provincial governments by increasing the capacity of decision-makers, including political parties, central and provincial civil servants, civil society leaders and the media, and to evaluate and analyze options for the creation of a stronger federal system based on international best practices.

Women Leadership, Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding

In this project, implemented by the local NGO PAIMAN, 105 male and female youth from five different universities of Peshawar as well members of the civil society were trained in the art of leadership, conflict transformation and peacebuilding with an emphasis on women leadership.

The "Trained Peace Practitioners" conducted orientation sessions with their university fellows as well member of their communities reaching out to some 65,000 women and men in the conflict affected and conflict prone areas of Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa and FATA. This initiative was the first of its kind in Pakistan.

Tongue of Passu glacier which is melting fast due to climate change

The Indus basin covers an area of about 128,000 square km and is shared by Afghanistan, China, India and Pakistan. Glaciers are major landscape features of this region. Snow and glacial melt contributes to nearly half of the average flow of the Indus River and its tributaries. The ongoing climate change is impacting the glacial regime in the basin.
