On 3 October, Germany will celebrate 26 years of Unity. On the occasion of this year's Day of German Unity, Federal President Joachim Gauck and Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier reflect upon the historic events that led to a reunited Germany and call for unity and action in the face of the European and global challenges ahead.

The fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany and the overcoming of the division of Europe into East and West: without a doubt, these events marked a historic watershed whose impact stretched far beyond Germany’s borders.
